No beep at start-up. Computer does not boot.

No beep at start-up. Computer does not boot.

Trouble:
Some times we turn on the computer and it does not turn on. There is no beep (sometimes many beeps in a pattern), or any kind of display and the computer does not boot. This happens when POST (power on self test) for the computer fails. Lets see why this happens and what to do in such cases.

Fix:
POST(power on self test) is a test which is done by the computer every time it is powered on. This test, all the physical hardware components of the computer are detected and tested for proper working. If any of the critical computer component is faulty or not detected, the POST fails. After this test fails, the computer does not go further and does not boot. There can be several reasons for failure of POST.
One of the most common reason is faulty or loose RAM module. So next time your computer does not give a beep at start-up and does not boot, perform the following checks.
  • Check that the RAM module is properly inserted in the RAM slot. If not, correct it.
  • If there is lots of dust around it, clean it with a DRY cloth gently. If needed, remove the RAM module from the RAM slot carefully and clean the contacts with DRY cloth and insert it back carefully.
